The Sheffield story behind the design
Castle Square’s Hole in the Road opened in 1967 and became one of Sheffield city centre’s best-known meeting places. Beneath the roundabout, its pedestrian concourse, shops, kiosks and fish tank remained part of everyday city life until the complex closed in 1994.
This design remembers both levels of the landmark: the traffic circling above and the community space below.
